History of the Fashion Week – Histoire de la Semaine de la Mode

History of the Fashion Week. The week of fashion shows, also known as “semaine de la mode or “fashion week”, is an event in the fashion industry that lasts approximately one week and takes place twice a year to allow designers and Fashion houses to present their latest ready-to-wear collections. Haute Couture is only for France.
The Fashion Week was initially made for journalists and not for customers.

The origin of the fashion week has existed since 1943 in New York (USA). At the moment when the war stops the creation of Paris, Eleanor Lambert, a famous fashion publicist, is organizing the “Press Week” in New York, a smaller and more intimate version of what Fashion Week is today.

After the war, the European capitals also launched their Fashion Week.
And Paris has again become the fashion capital with its famous Fashion Week, known to be (still today) the only one to present fashion shows “Haute Couture”

But Paris did not wait for this official creation to establish itself as the cradle of fashion. In the nineteenth century, Charles Frederick Worth, a French couturier of British origin, considered as the father of haute couture, presented in Parisian salons his creations on real mannequins !

Under its impulse, was created in 1868 “la Chambre Syndicale du Prêt-à-Porter des Couturier et des Créateurs de Mode”. It is still today that organizes twice a year presentations of the Haute Couture collections, in January and July.

Fashion shows are typically at the center of this event. The Fashion Weeks take place in the “Big Four”, an expression that designates the cities of Paris, London, Milan and New York, that is to say, the four fashion capitals in the world. Milan Fashion Week was born in 1975, after being organized in Florence

The four most important “fashion weeks” are, historically in chronological order of creation :

Paris remains considered the fashion capital because it is the only one to organize a Fashion Week Haute-Couture every year in January and July. The French capital welcomes six weeks of fashion every year, in January and July, around thirty Haute Couture fashion shows, around forty fashion shows in Masculine fashion, and in March and October, 150 women’s Ready-to-Wear fashion shows.

For haute couture, the rules are very strict. Each year, the list of members of the Haute Couture calendar is defined by a commission made up of professionals of the sector, then validated by the Ministry in charge of Industry.

It should be noted that there are also aids for young creators who have not had a place on the official calendar, notably through the setting up of showrooms and their promotion to the many journalists present for the event.

Traditionally, the first week is awarded in New York, and the last week in Paris, with in some cases “pre-collections” and held twice a year.

Over the past decade, several cities have organized their own fashion week.
We can quote Lahore, New Delhi, Dakar, Istanbul … There would be 140 in the world.

On peut citer Lahore, New Delhi, Dakar, Istanbul… Il y en aurait 140 dans le monde.
