In the ever-evolving sphere of fashion, where the quest for a universal fit remains elusive, Anrealage’s Autumn/Winter 2024-25 collection, conceived by the visionary Kunihiko Morinaga, stands out as a homage to the non-human. This season, under the dimmed lights of a space beneath the Pont Alexandre III, Morinaga presents a narrative that is as enchanting as it is unconventional, bringing inanimate geometrical shapes to life in a display that blurs the lines between the ordinary and the extraordinary.

The collection unfolds with a series of shapes – spheres, pyramids, cubes, octahedrons, dodecahedrons, and icosahedrons – each adorned in contemporary graphics and making their way down the runway. These shapes, animated and twirling, not only captivate but also challenge our perceptions of what fashion can embody. The opening act, a sphere wearing a blue and white ball shirt propelled by a Take-copter, is a playful nod to Doraemon, the beloved earless robotic cat from the eponymous Japanese children’s series by Fujiko F. Fujio. This tribute is a clear reflection of Morinaga’s childhood fascination and the whimsical design universe of Anrealage that resonates with the series’ concept of ‘Sukoshi Fushigi’ – a blend of sci-fi and warm-hearted wonder.

Following this captivating introduction, characters from the Doraemon series, including Dorami, Nobita, Suneo, Gian, and Shizuka, are reimagined as various geometric forms. Each character’s signature look is reinterpreted through graphic color blocks, further establishing the collection’s unique narrative. Additionally, spherical creations hint at Morinaga’s upcoming debut for HERNO® Globe and feature innovative designs such as a globe blouson realized through FOREARTH, Kyocera Corporation’s water-free printing process. This commitment to sustainability is underscored by the sporty quilted down looks inspired by the Reebok Instapump Fury 94 sneaker, marrying innovation with nostalgia.

A significant moment in the presentation involves nine designs, including a metallic mirror ball-inspired biker jacket and glow-in-the-dark stripes, transitioning from object avatars to human models. This shift not only showcases the garments’ adaptability but also highlights their intrinsic beauty and the dramatic transformation they undergo when subjected to gravity. Morinaga’s approach, viewing clothes as both objects and for objects, is a playful yet profound commentary on the fashion industry’s standards and the concept of a one-size-fits-all ethos.

By designing for the inanimate, Morinaga invites us to reimagine the relationship between clothing and wearer. These designs, when worn by humans, reveal an unexpected elegance, challenging conventional notions of fit and beauty. It’s a forward-thinking vision that suggests a future where fashion transcends human constraints, proposing a wardrobe that is as inclusive as it is imaginative.

The homage to Doraemon within this collection is not just a tribute to a childhood hero but a bridge to a world where the lines between reality and fantasy blur, reflecting Anrealage’s foundational ethos. Doraemon, with his endless array of gadgets, represents the boundless possibilities of imagination – a principle that is deeply embedded in Morinaga’s work.

Kunihiko Morinaga’s Autumn/Winter 2024-25 collection for Anrealage is more than a fashion statement; it’s a manifesto for a new era of design thinking. By celebrating the inanimate and drawing inspiration from a childhood icon, Morinaga not only pays homage to his roots but also pushes the boundaries of what fashion can be. This collection is a testament to the power of creativity, the importance of sustainability, and the enduring appeal of reimagining the world around us.
