Louis Vuitton Spring Summer 2021 Menswear presented in Shanghai August 6, 2020 blow up serious public conflict related to plagiarism, or simply a copy, and probably another juicy lawsuit, raised AGAIN against “creative” director of Louis Vuitton Menswear Virgil Abloh (brand owner Off-White, former DJ from Harlem, New York).
Walter Van Beirendonck, great Belgium designer, known for his artistic expressions in fashion and specifically in Menswear since 90s, head of the fashion department at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp posted his designs / collection from Menswear Fall-Winter 2016, which are in VERY “close shave” resembled new collection of Menswear Spring Summer 2021 by Virgil Abloh for Louis Vuitoon.
“Copying is nothing new. It’s part of fashion. But not like this. Not on that level, with their budgets, their teams, their possibilities,” said Walter Van Beirendonck to Belgium fashion magazine “Knack Weekend”, referring to Louis Vuitton, which is the world’s top luxury brand, valued at $32 billion in 2019. “That’s what is shocking to me.”
It is indeed… Although Virgil Abloh didn’t feel any need to excuse himself, or propose some kind of peaceful “business” solution, like Olivier Rousteing, “creative” director of Balmain, when he gets caught on copying, he’s trying “to butter up” his victims. For example, Thierry Mugler received a visit from Kim Kardashian right after he discovered copies of his designs from 90s by Olivier Rousteing, who bought several pieces and made several very expensive orders.
Strangely enough there’s always this couple Kanye West and Kim Kardashian involved in scandals related to the copies and all kind of ugliness related to intellectual property theft. This time is Kanye West defended his friend Virgil Abloh on Twitter. “Virgil can do whatever he wants,” he wrote. “Do you know how hard it’s been for us to be recognized?” It is indeed, Virgil Abloh does what he wants, including copies. Who stopped him to invite Walter Van Beirendonck to participate in collaboration for this new Menswear Spring Summer 2021 collection presented in Shanghai? No one! Virgil Abloh thought that during this vacation time no one would notice collection presented for Chinese market.
Virgil Abloh publicly answered to Walter Van Beirendonck that these accusations are “hate-filled attempt” to discredit him as a designer. Why would great designer like Walter Van Beirendonck hate Virgil Abloh??? There’s no reason for that. Great designer doesn’t have any emotion towards a DJ.
Virgil Abloh claims that his new Menswear Spring Summer 2021 collection inspired by Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton, Menswear Spring Summer 2005. Well… Teddy Bear, known DNA of Moschino since 80s, is not a good reference. But Virgil Abloh wouldn’t know that, would he? Very classic and classy collection of Marc Jacobs can’t be even from far be a reference to the new collection of Louis Vuitton Spring Summer 2021. No matter how well it was noted by Virgil Abloh in press-releases distributed during the show in Shanghai.
In the United States, fashion copyright law does not cover three-dimensional designs (unlike two-dimensional prints or patterns). However, Louis Vuitton is headquartered in France, where the intellectual property laws that protect fashion copyright are far more broad. And little Teddy Bear toy can’t even remotely related to the “designs” presented for this new Menswear collection of Louis Vuitton Spring Summer 2021.
The whole collection of Virgil Abloh for Louis Vuitton Menswear Spring Summer 2021 very much reflects artistic work, resembles artistic work of Walter Van Beirendonck. Louis Vuitton Menswear was always classic way to dress the men and never “arty-farty”. Virgil Abloh who never had designer / artist background and never had a design-art school can’t claim right now this territory by copying, and doing “what he wants”, and responding to the artists that their claims are “racial hatred” against him, spiced by bandit attitude “Walter, come at us”, as he and his friend Kanye West did in disputes blowing up Twitter until today.
Too bad that this plagiarism / and copy completely erased the wonderful work of the group of designers, who created the bags and accessories, who created this funky concept with movie and show. Johnny Depp, The Hatter from Alice in Wonderland, would love it! This collection could be real HIT OF SEASON….
