Pierpaolo Piccioli for Moncler Genius Fall-Winter 2019-2020. One year after its groundbreaking inception, Moncler Genius keeps evolving, truthful to its motto: one house, different voices.
It is one more incredible capsule collection of Pierpaolo Piccioli for Moncler. This time he decided to morph Renaissance into African culture. That is probably why he decided to engage Liya Kebede . “It’s so far from Valentino, from couture, that it’s kind of interesting to incorporate a different culture, a different identity into my own values”, said designer.
“For this collection, I wanted to turn the values of couture, the dream and the fantasy of fashion, into something different. I believe that you can’t do really anything very new, but you can create new harmonies for sure. And working with the technical identity of Moncler, plus the dream of couture, and Liya’s work with Ethiopian artisans, I think creates here new harmony”, said Pierpaolo Piccioli in his interviews.
This collection is like underwater dream-castle with floating magical creatures, princesses and angels. This collection has an enormous success since the moment it was shown in February during Milan Fashion Week.
Technicality of Moncler permitted Pierpaolo Piccioli to fuse the language of couture with patterns that recall African textiles, using the functionality of Moncler as the melting agent, and nylon laqué as the medium of choice. Bold silhouettes swarming in rhythmic intarsia ensue.
“I am after a balance of dreaminess, extravagance and soulfulness. I involved Liya Kebede, who is an active supporter of African artisans with her label lemlem, in the process, creating something true to her, to Moncler and to my own sensibility. Connecting diversities is my idea of inclusive creativity”, said Pierpaolo Piccioli.
“There is no better way to show how time-honored traditions, like our lemlem artisans’ work, have a place in modern fashion than this partnership, working with Pierpaolo and Moncler. I was honored to be a part of this creative process, bringing together heritages that at first glimpse seemed so different but when unexpectedly combined, create something so rich and new, redefining beauty and reminding us that there are no borders in life”, says Liya Kebede.
