Few decorative arts held as profound a grip on Gabrielle Chanel’s imagination as the antique Chinese lacquer screens that adorned her private sanctuary.

“I almost fainted with happiness the first time I saw a Coromandel screen,” Mademoiselle famously confessed.

That initial revelation blossomed into a lifelong fascination, ultimately inspiring one of the most distinctive masterpieces within the Les Exclusifs de CHANEL fragrance collection.

The Rue Cambon Sanctuary

The Coromandel screens—originating from China and named after India’s Coromandel Coast, the historic departure point for merchant vessels bound for Europe—became central to Gabrielle Chanel’s personal aesthetic.

On the second floor of her apartment at 31 rue Cambon in Paris, she lined the walls with these sumptuous, finely engraved panels. Mademoiselle dismantled and repositioned the folding screens to cover the walls like wallpaper and strategically conceal the doorways, effectively enclosing herself in a dreamlike world. Decorated with Asian florals, mythological creatures, and gilded scenes carved into dark lacquer, the panels provided a poetic, exotic counterpoint to the classical Parisian architecture.

The Olfactory Translation: Les Exclusifs de CHANEL

Within the Les Exclusifs de CHANEL portfolio—conceived to narrate the chapters, symbols, and inspirations of the House through high perfumery—Coromandel translates the mysterious, baroque aura of these lacquered panels into an intense, sensual sillage.

  • The Creators & Origins: Created in 2007 by CHANEL master perfumer Jacques Polge alongside Christopher Sheldrake, the composition was designed not as a literal imitation of wood varnish, but as an evocative, textured portrait of the screens’ dark richness.
  • The Sillage & Raw Materials: Classified as an intensely ambery, woody-oriental fragrance, Coromandel is anchored by a commanding dose of patchouli. The formula balances this earthy depth with rich benzoin, frankincense (olibanum), and a velvety embrace of vanilla and white chocolate.
  • The Evolution of the Line: Originally introduced as an Eau de Toilette in 2007, the fragrance was later reformulated as an Eau de Parfum in 2016 to intensify its warm, enveloping qualities, and subsequently expanded with an Extrait de Parfum edition crafted by in-house perfumer Olivier Polge.

Coromandel remains a testament to the power of Gabrielle Chanel’s interior world: structured, opulent, and steeped in amber and lacquer.
