Alexander McQueen and John Galliano for Givenchy 1997. There are many wonderful legends in fashion, and specially from the “Golden era” 90s. One of them is the story about Alexander McQueen and John Galliano in 1997 created absolutely ingenious collections for Givenchy in 1997.
Both great designers had one and absolutely amazing cross from Christian Dior to Givenchy in 1997. Both men came from hardscrabble backgrounds, both, through sheer force of will, went on to graduate from Central Saint Martins in London, overcame financial failures and staged some of the most provocative and romantic live events seen in any métier before or since.
John Galliano joined Givenchy in 1995. Alexander McQueen was saying “no” to LVMH for quiet some time. So when in 1997 position of creative director in Christian Dior became open, the choice was obvious – John Galliano. So Hubert de Givenchy choose Alexander McQueen.
2 different collections, 2 epic stories with both “characters” presented. It is known that John Galliano associated himself, presented himself as a Pirate, and Alexander McQueen was always a Cowboy.
