“Alchemy is a form of magic, so the transformation of images, or bodies, in art acts on dream / psychic substance,” – Leonora Carrington.

“Surreal images manage to make visible what is inherently invisible. I am interested in mystery and magic, which are also a way of exorcising uncertainty about the future,” – said Maria Grazia Chiuri about her fall-winter 2020-2021 Haute Couture collection.

And for the first time since Maria Grazia Chiuri took the position of creative director, it is indeed pleasure to see Dior house finding its DNA in beautiful and elegant gowns. We are all glad that she’s going trough these magical transformations. Well, we all hope that from this “caterpillar” we’ll see very beautiful butterfly.

In this particular period, the Artistic Director of Dior women’s collections wanted to look at the work of artists such as Lee Miller, Dora Maar and Jacqueline Lamba, who transcend the role of “muses” to which their beauty had initially reduced them , to stage – in their lives and in their surreal works – another femininity.

This new collection is marked by this attitude: connected, attentive to nature and its transformation. Rooms display a spectacular shade of red, like a coral reef waving in the gleams of the ocean. The colors of Leonora Carrington and Dorothea Tanning’s paintings inhabit the creations with their luminous nuances and their imagination.

The female body of the surrealists also calls to mind the reinterpreted figure of the miniature mannequin, a poetic emblem at the heart of couture. The artist Cindy Sherman took this almost magical object in one of her first video projects, which oscillates between the history of fashion and the possibility of a new representation; these miniatures allowing today to invent a different ritual.

Thus unveiled in a magic trunk embodying 30, avenue Montaigne, the haute couture collection is embarking on its world tour. Like an evocation of Monsieur Dior’s odyssey, echoing the Fashion Theater , a traveling exhibition between Europe and America, of the models of French fashion designers – who were traveling just after the war.

The Ateliers Dior also accomplished this exploration. Starting with haute couture “by day”, with its tailors in male fabric whose exceptional architecture is a virtuoso challenge, that of a creation perfectly carried out on a miniature scale. The coat reveals pleated thicknesses. The fallen evoke the ancient statues. Luminescences sublimate the gray and golden yellow tones, offering a dazzling radiance.

Made entirely by hand, the folds dressing these miniatures celebrate the beauty of the creative gesture that is the essence of sewing. Until the last surprise: a wedding dress, as tradition demands, a symbol that has been forgotten over time.

So it is natural to tell the extraordinary haute couture silhouettes by reinterpreting the female body by this singular prism that is the fashion doll.
