Analysis of Oscars 2021 with Best Looks attached. Review by Eleonora de Gray, Editor-in-Chief of RUNWAY MAGAZINE.

Cinema is an entertainment industry, basically an award honoring who’s the most popular one. Cinema is a great tool to talk about social problems until social problems get to it. This year Oscars, the Academy Award 2021 was criticized more than ever. During this health crises all events, fashion shows included, became digital and the red carpets turned into in-home fashion presentations. Organizers of Oscars 2021 award despite this decided still to go for formal event. Even with all necessary measures has been taken, still the Academy was very criticized for organizing the event and gathering more than 500 people – stars, photographers and journalists all together. The event received thousands very negative public comments on facebook and instagram accused being decadent and completely detached from the public suffering. After all it is the public who buy this production and have to be entertained, and make selected actors the stars – the most loved and popular.

I bring the most significant comments. This is important to see the disconnection not only Hollywood cinema industry but also fashion industry from people and today’s reality. Today fashion federations in USA and France have no connection to the public. Individualism is another very dangerous virus during these difficult times. Fashion brands are not gathering but organizing by themselves, trying to create their own circles of buyers, but millions fake instagram followers these brands were buying over several years don’t bring desirable results. Major stock drop, sales drop for American, French and Italian brands are the most evident “reality check”. Most people don’t even know the names of the brands. And on top even the most successful ones are not willing to spend anymore for expensive clothing which they have no place to wear except home.

These comments can’t be ignored, and specially when they are coming from thousands and thousands people. They are not really addressed to the stars, mostly to the organization:

"Having this event while most of the world still waits for access to a vaccine shows how disconnected Hollywood/celebrities are from reality."

"Glad Hollywood made the homeless leave the area around the Academy Awards so they can award best picture to a movie about a homeless person."

"9 million people watched worldwide. Only few thousands participated in rating. When will Hollywood wake up and realize NOBODY CARES anymore???"

"Didn't care to watch. Wake up Hollywood, do movies not politics. We don't care about your agenda."

So for who this event took place? From the looks of it the Oscars 2021 was some sort of private event, organizers and actors did for themselves, and then published photos on social media networks. 9 million of viewers our of usual 250 millions all over the world is a quiet a big change. And the designers were tagged alone – they did gowns for this private event, and were very happy about it, publishing photos and sketches of the gowns on their instagram.

The presented movies also received massive public critic. Probably only one actor who had enough guts to talk about it and face the public critic, Harrison Ford started his speech from the critic comments the last Indiana Jones movie received:

"I would like to share some criticism and editing tips made after a movie screening ... that I was a part of," explained the Indiana Jones performer, before starting to list things like, "Horrible voiceover, he looks drugged", “Dekker al piano never ends”, “Why three shots on eggs?”, “Until Zora's death the film is terribly boring“, “This film gets worse with every screening“.

On this cheerful note presenting ALL COLORS OF OSCARS 2021. This year the Academy gone all arty-farty with all colors and artistic brush strokes. Benetton will be jealous.
