Fendi’s Artistic Director of Couture and Womenswear, Kim Jones, masterfully brings Karl Lagerfeld’s futurism to life in the Spring Summer 2024 Haute Couture collection. In a dialogue between poetry and reality, Jones weaves a narrative of human futurism, celebrating the body, silhouette, and the meticulous handwork of couture.

Jones articulates his vision, stating, “In the collection, there is a humanism at the heart of this future; there’s the body, the silhouette within the silhouette, the person, and the handwork of the couture. The collection is about structure and decoration, where the two become indivisible. I wanted an idea of precision and emotion at once.”

This season’s couture is a seamless amalgamation of pragmatism and craftsmanship, skillfully executed by the artisans at the Fendi ateliers. From embroiderers to tailors, pattern cutters to leather workers, dressmakers to furriers – each contributes to reaffirm the humanity of the person wearing couture, emphasizing that they are always ‘someone’ rather than ‘something.’

The collection unfolds with a new ‘Scatola’ silhouette, meaning ‘box,’ showcasing precision geometric pattern cutting in fabrics like silk gazar. From the simplicity of geometry to the primal allure of crocodile, a ‘human futurism’ traverses the collection, merging constants of the past to create the present and the future.

The juxtaposition of structure and decoration reaches its zenith in intensely worked embroideries, appearing almost as a future skin. Feather-like fringes, organically shaped and fluidly contoured through delicate hand embroidery, move sinuously with the wearer, splicing the DNA of the natural and the manmade world.

Fine jewellery takes on a new dimension with ‘Singular Vision’ eyewear, designed by Delfina Delettrez Fendi, Artistic Director of Jewellery. Tailored to individual facial scans and realized in 18k white gold and white diamonds, these precious practical objects serve as sunglasses, spectacles, or enhancements.

Fendi extends the notion of precious practicality to the handbags in the collection, particularly the bespoke Baguette bags. Reflecting the materials of the clothing, from mink-lined crocodile to fringed embroideries, Silvia Venturini Fendi, Artistic Director of Accessories and Menswear, envisions these bags as sumptuous, personal objects ranging from Nano to Large.

A highlight of the show is the introduction of the Fendi Gems Baguette bags, showcasing intense craftsmanship and precious materials. The Mini Baguette bag features hardware in 18k white gold and a white diamond-pave-encrusted buckle with a platinum leaf applied to crocodile leather.

The collaboration with composer Max Richter adds an auditory layer to the couture experience, echoing Jones’ theme of ‘precision and emotion’ in a captivating score. Fendi Haute Couture Spring Summer 2024 is a testament to the harmonious convergence of artistry, craftsmanship, and innovation, setting the stage for a bold and inspired future in the world of high fashion.
