Givenchy Fall Winter 2023-2024 Menswear “From reduced tailoring to trash experience”. Review by Eleonora de Gray, Editor-in-Chief of RUNWAY MAGAZINE. Photo Courtesy: Givenchy.
Finest tailoring, exquisite fabrics, elegance are long gone from the house of Givenchy. For the last few years Givenchy became a brand of New Trash Generation (Generation T), stores got deserted. Since Matthew M. Williams became artistic director of Givenchy, a luxury brand instead of elegant graceful looks and proposed a new customer “Mix and Match” experience : Mickey Mouse with Trash.
Some media called this collection “the most compelling” or “experimental”. But no one could explain compelling to what, or what is so experimental turning everything to trash? We all do it every day. Consumer society does it on a daily basis. But Matthew M. Williams proposes to start from trash, and… turn it into more trash. How creative, indeed.
Overall, the new Givenchy collection for the next Fall Winter season is “gothic, toxic, babamoo, babacar and babacool”. Matthew M. Williams has his own brand of streetwear 1017 ALYX 9SM. When I see these urban, multi-layered dirty looks from this brand – I understand. Why not produce something in this direction if there’s someone who’s interested in this style. But I would never understand turning Givenchy into this. toxic waste. Although there’s no secret Matthew M. Williams is a designer who worked before for Kanye West / Yeezy, and also who shares his views on life, including design and clothing.
So here we are, Givenchy today is a shadow of the Yeezy brand and his Donda agency where Matthew M. Williams worked before.
