In September 2010, Tom Ford debuted his women’s ready-to-wear collection. He was one of the first American designers to adopt a see-now, buy-now model in 2016, which aimed to shorten the time between runway shows and store deliveries. Although this idea was too radical for the industry, he pioneered it. In 2015, he also launched the Oscar-time LA show to bridge the gap between the runway and the red carpet.
Tom Ford has sold his company to Estée Lauder for $2.8 billion in December 2022. Consequently, there will not be another Tom Ford by Tom Ford show. For his last collection he chose to showcase an Archive collection of his greatest hits. This collection includes iconic looks such as Gwyneth Paltrow’s white column gown with an attached cape from the 2012 Oscars, Zendaya’s hot pink molded breastplate and fluid skirt from the first season of Euphoria, and Rihanna’s stretch sequin and mesh dress.
For his post-pandemic return to the runway in spring 2022, Ford reflected on the influence of social media on fashion. He acknowledged that photogenic clothes must be bold and not timid. Tom Ford has always created bold fashion statements. It is unfortunate that he is stepping away as the worlds of fashion and Hollywood continue to intertwine. However, we can look forward to watching his cinematic vision unfold on the big screen in the future.
